Daily Headlines: September 8, 2014
* Argentina: Several thousand fans of Gustavo Cerati lined the streets of Buenos Aires on Friday to view the funeral procession of the late Argentine rock musician.
* Nicaragua: Officials claimed that a meteorite most likely caused a blast that left a forty foot wide crater in Managua on Saturday night.
* Chile: Police in Santiago clashed with vandals following a largely peaceful protest yesterday to commemorate the victims of human rights abuses during the regime of Gen. Augusto Pinochet.
* El Salvador: Ex-President Francisco Flores is under house arrest after he turned himself in to face corruption charges stemming from his alleged misappropriation of $15 million.

Daily Headlines: May 29, 2014
Note: Before getting to today’s headlines, I would like to sincerely apologize for the lack of posts over the past to weeks including the inexcusable absence of posts on Wednesday.
* Brazil: Indigenous groups have joined the growing number of protests opposed to the massive public spending on venues and other preparations for the upcoming World Cup.
* Colombia: Thousands of people lined the streets of Barranquilla and the nearby town of Fundacion as part of the funeral procession for twenty-eight children who died in a recent bus fire.
* Mexico: Leaders of the vigilante movement in Michoacán called for the creation of “self-defense” groups across Mexico in order to combat violence.
* Argentina: The Argentine government reached a deal with the Paris Club of creditors to repay nearly $10 billion dollars in debts.

World Watch: The Mind is Sharper than the Beak
* World: According to a study published in the latest issue of the journal Science pigeons posses basic math knowledge on par with certain primates like rhesus monkeys.
* Czech Republic: Mourners gathered at Prague’s St. Vitus Cathedral for the state funeral of recently deceased playwright, activist, and ex-president Vaclav Havel.
* Syria: The U.S. State Department condemned a series of car bombings in Syria that left over forty people dead and dozens injured.
* Europe: Turkey froze political and military ties with France in response to the French parliament's approval of a bill criminalizing denials of the Turkish genocide against Armenians over a century ago.

* Brazil: Brazil’s Sao Paulo University, Chile's Catholic University, and Brazil's Campinas State University topped the first ever QS list ranking Latin American universities.
* Latin America: A U.N. report blamed organized crime for a surge in violence in Central America while the International Press Institute denounced death threats against twelve Latin American journalists.
* Mexico: Authorities rescued thirty-eight U.S.-bound migrants who were reportedly abandoned in the desert near the Mexican border with Arizona.
* Venezuela: Ex-President Carlos Andres Perez was buried in Venezuela after a bitter legal battle among his family members since he died last December.
