Fugitive Former Guatemalan President Alfonso Portillo Found in Mexico

For the last four years, former president of Guatemala, Alfonso Portillo, has been hiding from corruption charges in Mexico. Pero, that is about to end. Portillo was extradited to his home country.

Portillo certainly has an interesting background, that includes a shooting. That hasn't stopped some from thinking that he is the best thing that ever happened to Guatemala while others celebrate that he will face justice.

I am from Guatemala and lived there when he governed better said misgoverned the country. It's amazing that during his tenure, the gov't embezzled somewhere north of 1 billion quetzales ~ +/-$150MM US$ and he and his cronies are not in jail! Furthermore, and more dramatic, the country he left behind is one where organized crimed and drug trafficers basically rule..even certain parts of the country -- probably with their Mexican groups-- and to our sadness this country is just shy of the Colombia that Pablo Escobar terrorized. The only thing difference is that in Guate we do not produce cocaine, we are the bridge to the US via Mexico.

Sooo sad for the country that I may no longer return to because of the violence which I dont want my young son to hear, see or lived scared of; the insecurity driven by the same police officers [ specially speaking to those "officers" that are supposed to safeguard the community in carretera al El Salvador], to the ministry of interior to solve the crime of the venezuelan police chief that was assasinated 2 days after the president released him of his duty after years of helping solve kidnappings, and the ineptitude of the new gov't to do anything to correct the course.

And to top it off, you know that he and his ex ruling party with Rios Mont at the helm, will have him set free!! That is the only reason he came back...he knows he can rig it and pay it off through his corrupt, narco friends.

Sad state of affairs for our Guatemala.
