Bush, Chavez continue war of words

Adding to the unsteady relationship between U.S. President George Bush and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, the U.S. decertified Venezuela as a country that had 'failed demonstrably' to curb drug exports, while Chavez said the same day that he had 'considerable evidence' that the U.S. is planning to invade his country. So, as someone who follows Latin America more closely than me, what do you think of Mr. Chavez's allegations of 'invasion plans'?

Just curious.

It's interesting, in the interview where he spoke about this he had so many specific details. One part of me writes him off as a nutcase, but another reminds me of US invasions in the past. It is extremely unlikely that Bush would ever do anything overt; with a 39% approval rating he has little room to maneuver. However, Bush has publicly met with the opposition, and there are a million ways to cause trouble for another country's leader without being obvious about it.

Hi Taylor,

Nice blog and I like your subject matter.

Have you read The Nation's latest article The War For Latinos??

Hi Lizzy, thanks for reading! I had not yet seen that article, but on your selection went to take a look. The article, The War for Latinos, concerns US army recruiting efforts towards Latinos here in the States. It's very unfortunate, because as recruitment has fallen (presumably as fewer see the need for a war in Iraq) recruiters have been ever more aggressive, going so far as to blatantly lie to get people to go to war. It's a very nasty business, even more so as, in all wars, the poor are disproportionately called upon to "serve their country". Sadly, in this country, that often means Latinos.
