Recently there has been more and more press concerning this issue, and the drug cartels' raging battle against the mexican government and I think it's been a long time coming.

I don't think people realize the severity of this issue, and how important it is for the mexican government to not only win this "war: but to regain control over the areas which the cartels have dominant control over.

President Calderon bit off more then he could chew and just like the US in Iraq, the mexican government now has to stick with this for the long run. Calderon needs help from outside countries, and needs to make sure that this war does not come to an end with his presidency.

Why this issue was not taken care of earlier, i dont know...but there is a severe feeling of angst when i travel to Mexico now.

Calderon will undoubtedly stick with the is for as long as he's president.

Assuming Mexico doesn't collapse by the end of Calderon's term (2012) the issue becomes will his successor continue the law enforcement offensive.

"Why this issue was not taken care of earlier, i dont know"

One clue via one word - corruption.
