Event: “Where You Live” film screening

If you’re in New York tomorrow night and looking for an inexpensive, artsy reason to go out then why not catch the latest screening from Rooftop Films:

Short films that show us where you live and how you live. From the harshest African deserts to the fertile Irish countryside, from rapidly growing guesthouses in Hong Kong to the slowly fading inner city of Detroit, these fun and fascinating documentaries invite you into unique communities worldwide.

Venue: On the roof of El Museo Del Barrio

Two of the six short films to be presented mañana focus on Mexico and the southwest U.S. Furthermore, El Museo Del Barrio is a fantastic venue in Spanish Harlem which will reopen this October after an extensive renovation.

Event: Vigil for Jose Sucuzhanay

There will be a vigil for the recently deceased Ecuadorian migrant who was assaulted in Brooklyn. Jose Sucuzhanay passed away a few days ago in what police suspect was a hate crime. He was the blank of an alleged anti-Latino, homophobic attack.

Here are the details of the vigil according to an e-mail and apparently corroborated by a local New York blog:

Event: "HOPE: Living and Loving with HIV in Jamaica"

Poet Kwame Dawes will read from several works inspired by his trips to Jamaica. His poetry came about as a result of his work with the Pulitzer Center’s HOPE project which looks at the impact of HIV/AIDS in Jamaica.

Today’s Video: Junot Diaz discussion tonight!

Dominican-American author/ literary darling Junot Diaz will be speaking at a free event tonight at the New York’s CUNY Graduate Center. (Click here for more information on the discussion).

Chile. He will mostly speak about Chile, as well
as draw lessons for other emerging market
economies and focus on the recent financial turmoil.

Bios: Vittorio Corbo has been the Governor of the
Central Bank of Chile since May 2003. He has been
Professor of the Economics School of the Catholic
University of Chile since 1981. Professor Corbo
graduated in business studies from the University
of Chile in 1967 and received a Ph.D in Economics
from the MIT in 1971. He is author of nine books
and over a hundred articles published in books
and international periodicals specialising in economic affairs.

Event: “True Life: I Live on The Border”

I confess that I should’ve mentioned this before since it’s an event that will happen less than 90 minutes after this post is published.

Today at 5pm MTV and MTV Tr3s will air a new season of its documentary series “True Life” with a look at life along the U.S.-Mexico border. “True Life: I Live on The Border” examines the relationships, difficulties, and experiences of three youth that live along the U.S.’ southern border.

Event: Ibero-american Films @ High Line Festival

As part of the High Line Festival in New York City, a film fest starts tonight airing several classic movies from Spain and the Americas. Curator David Bowie (yes, that David Bowie) selected several top-notch films which range from silent movies like 1931 Brazilian film “Limite” to more contemporary fare such as the award-winning 2004 drama “Machuca.”

As Bowie himself admitted in a recent interview:

“For this festival I chose…namely Latin American and Spanish film of the last 100 years—and what a fortuitous one it has been! It's so exciting to dive headfirst into this world. Such talent, and there’s great innovation going on. Like many people, I was really only aware of the most obvious work, Almodóvar, Buñuel, Saura and a few others. But being thrown in at the deep end—this is how I like to find things. And I really make the effort”.
