Nuestro Cine: One man's trash is another man's treasure

Last month we highlighted a screening of the Mexican film "La Cuerda Floja" ("The Tightrope") at New York's El Museo Del Barrio and as part of the Rooftop Films series. With the series in its final week Rooftop Films will once again present another great Latin American film a El Museo: "Waste Land." This documentary shows a project by Brazilian artist Vik Muniz focusing on the garbage collectors at the world's largest dump in Rio de Janeiro. Muniz enlists the pickers to create images of themselves using trash, and their artwork reveals their deep emotions and aspirations.

Nuestro Cine: Under the big top

If you're in the New York City area tonight please head out to El Museo Del Barrio for the screening of a brilliant documentary. Presented as part of the Rooftop Films series, "La Cuerda Floja" ("The Tightrope") looks at a small family circus in Mexico trying to survive as it goes from town to town entertaining villagers. The circus faces constant financial difficulties while performers such as eldest daughter Jaque contemplate leaving her family behind for a better life.

"With a deft eye for symbolic details, a remarkable gift for artistically representing key story points, and the ability to quietly build narrative tension, (director Nuria) Ibanez has crafted a realist documentary that feels like a dreamy fiction", according to Rooftop Films' website on the film.

Doors for the screening open at 8pm and the event includes live music and an after party. El Museo is located at 1230 Fifth Avenue (at 104th Street) and tickets can be purchased at the door or online by clicking here.

Two of the six short films to be presented mañana focus on Mexico and the southwest U.S. Furthermore, El Museo Del Barrio is a fantastic venue in Spanish Harlem which will reopen this October after an extensive renovation.

Event: “Rooftop Films” at El Museo

The Rooftop Films Summer Series continues tonight with a screening tonight at New York’s El Museo Del Barrio. The museum (one of the most underrated in the Big Apple, I believe) will feature music by “Puerto Rican electro-pop quartet” Balun, then feature the movie “Up With Me”.

According to Rooftop Films’ website, the film looks at several dilemmas:

“In school, they taught us about great civilizations. But one day, they’ll count Harlem as one of them, and they’ll count us...” But when Francisco, a teenager from Harlem, is admitted to an upstate boarding school on scholarship, he is torn between his life at home—his loyal girlfriend and his jealous best friend—and the new environment.

In tough and disadvantaged neighborhoods, people always face a dilemma choosing between local pride and worldly desire, between staying loyal and seeking a better life. How do you improve yourself (or even define “improvement”) in ways that don’t alienate your friends, your loved ones, your community?
