World Watch: From Yellow to black

* China: An emergency cleanup operation has been launched in order to contain over 11,000 barrels of crude oil that has spilled into the Yellow Sea.

* U.K.: BP’s alleged role in release of convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi will reportedly be one of the main topics to be discussed during British Prime Minister David Cameron’s visit to the White House.

* South Africa: A three-year study conducted in South Africa found that an experimental vaginal gel cuts the HIV infection rates in 889 women by 50%.

* India: At least 61 people died and nearly 100 were injured after a pair of express trains collided in the eastern part of the country.

Why does a blog named "Our Latin America" only have bloggers with gringo names? Is that some Monroee Doctrine thing?

from de Clermont - To Rafinha - Rafinha me parece un nombre musulman. ¿Qué? ¿Ahmadinajad te mandó para molestar a los norteamericanos? En serio, ¿qué importa si los lectores tengan nombres anglosajones? Además, conozco un montón de latinoamericanos que usan nombres que se parecen a los en anglosajón, por ej. en vez de decir Miguel dicen Mike, o Al en vez de Alberto o hasta Pete en vez de Pedro.

Permita-me responder-lhe em português. Se eu consigo entender seu espanhol, você deve entender meu português. "Rafinha" não é um nome muçulmano; é o diminutivo português para "Rafael".

Quanto ao fato de gringos escreverem sobre affairs da América Latina, isso não me incomoda. Que o façam, ainda por cima, sob uma perspectiva pró-americana, aceito-o também. Não é a primeira vez que me deparo com blogs sobre a região - blogs geralmente escritos por gringos - que cobram, dos países latinoamericanos, uma relação com os EUA que se resuma ao alinhamento automático com os interesses desse país.

E é essa minha impressão deste blog. E que ele se chame "Our Latin America" - o que é repulsivo quando claramente seus autores não são da região -, só reforça essa aparência. O que me incomoda é que gringos cobrem uma política de alinhamento voluntário - uma cobrança advinda de uma mentalidade como aquela cultivada pela Monrore Doctrine - enquanto dão a impressão de não o fazer.

Regarding the notion of this "Monroe Doctrine" idea on our site can you Rafinha or someone else provide explicit examples of what you mean? I don't quite understand the accusation that we're insidiously espousing a so-called "policy of alignment."
