Tensions continue to rise in the aftermath of what most observers consider a fraudulent number of municipal elections, and this week the attacks are getting personal.Nowhere was the controversy sharper than in the capital city of Managua, where former boxer Alexis Arguello upset the front runner and FSLN opposition leader Eduardo Montealegre of the PLC, who claimed victory despite the contested official numbers showing he had narrowly lost. Last week, FSLN supporters threw rocks at the PLC headquarters in Managua.
Over the weekend, Montealegre's protest caravan, en route from Managua, was attacked by angry mobs, resulting in the injury of several PLC supporters. Similar controversy is playing out in the contested city of León.
