Wild weather hits Americas

Tropical storms, torrential rains and other weather phenomena have wrecked havoc for several Latin American countries over the past few days. For example:

• Tropical Storm Barbara left over eight thousand people homeless in the Dominican Republic and caused moderate material damage in Mexico and Guatemala.
• Mudslides killed at least seven people in Medellin, Colombia (image).
• A cold wave caused rolling blackouts in Argentina and energy shortages in Chile, while over fifty children were killed in mountainous areas of Peru.
