Yesterday the Bush administration and Democratic leaders in Congress reached a deal on free trade pacts with several states including Peru, Colombia, and Panama. U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab deemed the compromise as “a historic bipartisan breakthrough,” that would allow environmental and labor concerns to become key parts of free trade agreements.Democratic legislators emphasized that the deal would only ease the ratification of free trade pacts with Peru and Panama. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that a “difficult revision” is needed on the trade deal with Colombia partly due to concerns over violence against trade unionists, (e.g. Chiquita banana). Earlier this week, Colombia’s vice president warned that the country may have to “reevaluate its relationship with the United States” if the trade agreement is not approved.
