That's great news, for a number of reasons: she's an indigenous candidate with an impeccable reputation, she'll give the Guatemalan elections much-needed international attention, and she'll be a big boost for Nineth Montenegros political party, in my opinion the only decent one in Guatemala (and until now a very small one too).
The fact she's both indigenous AND a woman, is two steps forward at the same time for Guatemala.
Menchu would certainly be a viable candidate for the reasons that you mention. Unfortunately her reputation has been slightly marred by the allegations of lying and exaggerating in her autobiography. Still its difficult to find another possible presidential candidate with more fame then her.
