Since last Monday one of the seats on the U.N. Security Council (UNSC) has been vacant as neither Venezuela nor Guatemala have received minimum 2/3 support from member states. Now comes news that Venezuela and Guatemala have agreed to select a compromise candidate from Latin America. So far, Venezuela has asked two countries to step in as a compromise bid: Bolivia and the Dominican Republic. U.S.-backed candidate Guatemala has yet to publicly endorse either choice and it’s unclear how states will vote once balloting resumes on October 31st. (Cuba has been an exception so far as their government has publicly supported Bolivia’s possible bid).
