The Union of South American Nations, known as Unasur, held a meeting on Monday to discuss regional concerns.
Rafael Correa, who was sworn in for a second term as president of Ecuador on Monday, also assumed the rotating role of president of Unasur. During the meeting, Correa called for a regional monetary agreement, as well as the establishment of a new multilateral lending agency.
Two other important issues that were discussed were the crisis in Honduras and the US military bases in Colombia. President Michelle Bachelet, the outgoing Unasur president, called on the group to support the General Secretary of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza, in his efforts to bring stability to Honduras. “(We have to) renew our support for Insulza as he has been working constantly to guarantee the possibility of restoring democratic and constitutional order in Honduras. The crisis in Honduras has been the most recent reminder that democracy has still not been completely consolidated in the region," Bachelet remarked.
Regarding the US bases in Colombia, Unasur's leaders agreed to hold a summit in Buenos Aires later this month to address their concerns. President Hugo Chavez stated, "I don't want to sabotage your ceremony Rafael ... (but) we are very worried. This could provoke a war in South America." Later President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said, "As president of Brazil, this climate of unease disturbs me. I think we should directly discuss our discontent with the American government — directly with them."

Hugo Chavez is constantly talking of War with Colombia.
Chavez and Correa mobilized a lot of troops to the border with Colombia.
What was the reaction of Colombia ??
Nothing .... Just despise Bullies by doing nothing ... Let them come and eat fire and blood !!
Colombia did not mobilize troops !!
I watched a lot of Videos those days and I saw Venezuelan Mothers weeping and crying because their sons were mobilized for a supposed war.
They were right in being weeping, once the Venezuelan Troops enter Colombia they will be faced with a Hell that is completely unknown for them, like Big Mountains not familiar to them, constant rains that seem to never end, a thick vegetation ideal for snipers and sharpshooters, etc ..
And a population that knows very well what is War and Guerrilla Tactics, and a Colombian Army that is Battle Hardened and Battle Practiced in the Most Cruel War.
So Chavez and Correa are no more than despicable Bullies.
Correa like the RCA Victor Cute Doggie "Listening to the Master's Voice"
The Mother of the Sultan when leaving Granada after delivering the Alhambra to the Catholic Kings in 1492.
"Weep like a Woman what you didn't defend like a Man" ....
Correa allowed a Big Army of FARC in Ecuador !!
A Big Army of Child Murderers, Kidnappers for Ransom, Sowers of Land Mines, Bomb Terrorists that killed Civilians.
Throwing Gas Cylinders on the homes of Old People, killing Civilian Children in those attacks.
What a Bunch of Cowards and Terrorist Friends in Unasur.
Colombia does well in accepting American Technology and Lula da Silva does well in deviating the Hate of the Ridiculous Weeping Madmen.

Dear Latin Americanist, why do you say that there will be US bases in Colombia? Both Colomobian and the US governments have denied that there will be any US bases. There will only be a maximum of 800 soldiers present at various times IN COLOMBIAN BASES AND PORTS. They are Colombian bases that already exist. Please do not add to the propaganda of Chavez and his other 2 Chiflados.
@Victor:
l respect your opinion and l realize you back Uribe's efforts to bring peace to colombia, but when you say Correa allowed a Big Army of FARC in Ecuador !! that implies that Uribe allowes thousands of "big armies" of FARC in Colombia.
why a well-armed army like colombian cannot stop FARC and we should expect little ecuadorian army to detect FARC´s base? both countries have security problems in their amazonic jungle
