Over 500 guests participated in a dinner last Friday honoring wanted ex-CIA operative Luis Posada Carriles. According to remarks by one of the event’s organizers, the gala aimed to “recognize Posada as a great Cuban, a man of dignity and decency and as a great patriot who has suffered a lot.”Posada Carriles spoke at the event and claimed that Cuba will soon come “to the end of a terrible stage.” Meanwhile, Venezuela's ambassador in Washington blasted the dinner as “outrageous” and an example of White House hypocrisy in fighting terrorism.
Last year, Posada Carriles was released by a federal judge after he was detained on immigration charges. He is wanted by Cuba and Venezuela for terrorism charges based on his supposed masterminding the 1976 bombing of Cuban jetliner and several hotel bombings in Havana.
