The Senate voted 53-38 in a “no-confidence vote” against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, yet fell 7 votes short of moving to full debate. Though Democrats were behind the initiative, 7 Republicans voted against Gonzales. Through it all, President Bush has remained supportive of Gonzales and believes there has been “no wrongdoing” in the Justice Department. The Mexican-American Gonzales has been accused of firing eight federal attorneys due to purely political reasons. Bipartisan pressure has increased against Gonzales to resign especially after his performance at recent Senate hearings.
