Monday September 11

• Two anniversaries were observed: the 2001 attacks on landmarks in Washington and New York as well as the 1973 coup against Chile’s government.

• Panama, Costa Rica, and El Salvador announced the creation of a tri-nation stock exchange that will deal in corporate debt and stocks.

• Uruguayan police arrested 7 ex-soldiers and policemen accused of the kidnapping and disappearances of several Uruguayans in Argentina during the 1970s.

Tuesday September 12

• Bolivia’s government is confident that their anti-drug efforts will allow them to continue getting preferential trade privileges from the U.S.
  

• A California judge ruled that the El Salvadoran son of a legal immigrant in the U.S. does not have to be immediately deported and can stay with his mom until next summer.

• Bolivian president Evo Morales started a trip abroad by speaking to indigenous leaders in Guatemala.

Wednesday September 13

• Mexico’s top electoral court will burn ballots from the controversial presidential election despite some notable opposition.

• Peru’s government promised to change its anti-drug policy and remove the stigma of being the world’s number 2 coca producer.

Thursday September 14

• Next year’s Copa America soccer tournament in Venezuela is expected to create 70,000 jobs.

• A deaf mute girl made history by nearly winning the Ms. Venezuela beauty pageant.

• A U.N. report found increased mobile phone usage by impoverished countries.

Friday September 15

• Supporters of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador lifted their blockade in Mexico City.

• The U.S. will send nearly half a billion dollars in aid to Haiti.

• Science magazine reported archeologists found a stone slab in Mexico with 3000 year old writing which would make it the oldest writing ever found in the Western Hemisphere.

Saturday September 16

• Panama’s economy has grown more than expected according tho government statistics.

• Haiti was formally accepted as a member of the Non-aligned Movement.

• Bolivia’s hydrocarbons minister resigned after the country’s government backed down in an energy dispute with Brazil.

Sunday September 17

• Clash of the anti-U.S. titans: Iran’s president visits Venezuela.
  

• The final declaration of the Non-aligned Movement summit in Cuba said that no one country or region should control the world and also condemned most forms of terrorism.
