ReplyDeletewhen I was in Nicaragua recently, I spent some time with ex-Catholics who had converted to American style fundamentalism. These brilliant young people were quietly disgusted by what they saw in the Catholic Church as a failure to actually practice their own teachings. Rather than take a Sixties interpretation, though, the young Nicas were going in the other extreme. At age 26, one young woman would not even let herself dance.
now I see all this as a kind twisted competition for her heart.
"American style fundamentalism" is part of it though I'm sorry to read about the internal conflict that young lady must feel.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's the environment one is in, which was something I noticed while visitng Colombia (a heavily Roman Catholic nation). Even while watching the news on TV from there during this Holy Week I've seen that they are not broadcasting from the studio but rather from outside main cathedrals. It's amazing, really though I also wonder if it is perhaps going a wee bit too far.
