AB 1468 (Garrick) - Would require hospitals to report on the citizenship status of their patientsWhat is disturbing about these, besides the obvious, is how these proposals threaten the rights of all California residents. regardless of their immigration status, especially the one about allowing the declaration of a state of emergency.
AB 1882 (Garrick) - would require police to contact immigration authorities when a person suspected of being an illegal immigrant is arrested for driving under the influence.
AB 2102 (Walters) - would require state agencies to check all new employees' work eligibility through a federal electronic database called E-Verify
AB 39 (Benoit) - would require the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to tally the cost of jailing undocumented inmates each year and bill the federal government
AB 1928 ( Anderson ) - would require local law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities when they arrest suspected illegal immigrants
AB 2420 (Huff) - would prohibit cities from declaring themselves "sanctuary cities" for illegal immigrants and not allowing their police to cooperate with federal immigration authorities
AB 648 (Adams) - would add 10 years to the sentence of anyone convicted of a felony who has a previous felony conviction in California for which they were deported
AB 2812 (Silva) - would allow the governor to cite illegal immigration as a cause to declare a local or state emergency

Maegan la Mala says, "What is disturbing about these, besides the obvious, is how these proposals threaten the rights of all California residents. regardless of their immigration status, especially the one about allowing the declaration of a state of emergency."
ReplyDeleteI wonder how US citizens and legal immigrants would have their right threatened by any of these proposals. Let's take a look at two of them,
AB1882 would help deportation of illegal aliens who drive while drunk. Is Maegan la Mala saying getting illegal aliens who drive while drunk deported is threatening the rights US citizens? These drunk drivers kill hundreds, if not thousands of US citizens every year.
AB648 would make illegal aliens who have been deported think twice before returning to the US illegally again. These people have already shown that they are undesirable or they wouldn't have been deported. How is any citizen's rights impacted?
From the perspective of illegal aliens, I can see how all of these proposals would be disturbing. They show California is beginning to at least consider calling an end to the free party.
Maybe the interest of US citizens are finally being considered. A good start, but only a start.
Until the pro illegal alien/amnesty lobby can demonstrate how it is a good thing for California citizens to have illegal aliens chasing fewer resources! Overpopulation, congestion, urban sprawl, crime, pollution, lack of affordable housing, failing schools, inadequate health care, diminishing resources, vanishing farm land and green space, depressed wages, increased tax burdens, etc. etc, etc., I for one will be happy to see more and more laws passed by State government to make life as unpleasant as possible for illegal aliens. Enforcing our laws against illegal aliens is not a crime; it's an imperative!”
As H.L. Mencken said,"it is in the nature of the human species to reject what is true but unpleasant and to embrace what is obviously false but comforting. That I think is what has befallen Maegan la Mala.
Oh how I love people who make statements but are unwilling to take credit for them (yes, I'm looking at you anonymous).
ReplyDeleteAnyway, let's look at how anti-immigrant legislation impacts all people.
Since when is drunk driving the exclusive property of undocumented immigrants? Wouldn't it be in the best interest of all people to have harsher punishments for drunk drivers in general? Wouldn't it be better to invest money in alcohol treatment programs?
What makes a person undesirable? Being brown? What about those girls who were deported for skipping school? I know plenty of white kids skipping school? Can we deport them?
In terms of the wider implication, specifically I am concerned about the ability to declare a state of emergency because of undocumented immigrants. I am concerned about how this will make racial profiling more ok than it already is. How it will give more license to an already racist police system that sees no problem in entering my grandfather's apartment, throwing him up against a wall and demanding his papers because of what he looks like and because of his last name (the fact that he was a citizen didn't really seem to matter in the violation of his rights).
