Mexican daily La Jornada published an article yesterday where a defiant mayor Marcelo Ebrard (image) claimed to be “with a calm conscience and ethical perspective” over the issue of abortion. Nearly a week after “Simply put, we are in the 21st century, not the 16th; we will act according to the law and the Constitution. We are obligated to carry out the law and that is what we shall do.”
Ebrard also responded to the possibility of being excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church (“let’s see if they do it”); however, he did not directly comment on remarks by Cardinal Norberto Rivera at doctors to refuse abortions at public medical clinics.
