Morning briefs

* Blockades in the major Bolivian city of Santa Cruz were gradually being lifted as protestors demanded the passage of land reform acts that were being stalled in Congress.

* 56 people died in Chile during the five days of Independence Day celebrations earlier this week.

* Separate polls in Venezuela coincide on Chavez’ lead in his bid for reelection but differ on the margin of the lead.

* Mexico decides to back Guatemala in their attempt for a U.N. Security Council seat, while Chile remains undecided.
