U.S. “prepared” to respond to hurricanes Latin America & Caribbean

In light of the ongoing controversy over the U.S. government’s handling of the effects of Hurricane Katrina, the Agency for International Development (USAID) claims that it is ready to handle hurricane-related emergencies in Latin America and the Caribbean. Heavy rains and tropical storms battered many areas of the Caribbean as well as several Central American countries. (Image shows USAID assistance in Guatemala after Hurricane Stan hit in 1998).

There certainly has been much talk about the potential threat of the upcoming hurricane season on the Caribbean and Latin America. There is very good reason for all the talk. About 3 years ago, I attended a USAID conference in DC that talked about USAID's role in humanitarian intervention that might be needed should Cuba get caught in a bad way. The conference was filled with every former Alpha 66 member still alive and their descendants. They discussed the need to possibly bring in US troops to "help transport" stuff. The US is prepping us for a not so humanitarian intervention in Cuba. Who knows ,may be part of the strategy for Venezuela as well.

  2. Thanks for your comment. By the way, do you happen to remember the name of the USAID conference you mentioned in your comment? I seem to vaguely remember a small blurb about it in El Nuevo Herald where they may have mentioned the heavy presence of the Cuban exile community.

  4. USA tries to prepare to respond well to hurricanes, but many of the most dangerous hurricanes are in Caribbean Islands !
