Chavez calls Fox a "puppy of empire"
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called Mexican President Vicente Fox a "puppy of empire" for supporting US-led free trade agreements in the Americas. (Bloomberg)
BUSH ON CHAVEZ, FROM BRASILIA: The ``other seeks to roll back the democratic process of the past two decades by playing to fear, pitting neighbor against neighbor and blaming others for their own failure to provide for their people.''
Chavez, the cocky, Vaudvillean ex-paratrooper-turned-politician, in the too familiar style of the bygone Banana Republic era, appeals almost exclusively to the outddated and debunked dreams of the new breed of socialists (who are again popping up like toxic mushrooms in American academia).
Of course, Hugo views with alarm don Vincente's stand with free market capitalism. His survival for more than the short-term, requires regional support (he's flailing about for any support, including China, an act that doesn't endear him to anyone except Bejing's Politburo).
Unfortunately for the former sergeant, Bush's recent speech reflects present reality as well as the future trend in the hemisphere.
