Music briefs: Aterciopelados coming out with new album; Mana release new single; Juanes on hiatus

-Colombian rock band Aterciopelados (left image) have been touring the U.S. and are soon going to release their first album in five years with guest vocals from Spain’s Alex Ubago and Mexico’s Julieta Venegas.

-Mexican rockeros Mana released the first single from their upcoming album last Monday. The song, entitled “Labios Compartidos” comes from the album “Amor en Combatir” which will hit stores in late August.

-Juanes will be taking a year-long break from touring and traveling in order to “devote more time to my family…and to work more” for his charity.

-Banda and mariachi singer-songwriter Jenni Rivera admitted to flirting with the notion of releasing songs in English even if it means alienating her core audience.

-The Miami Herald slammed the “mechanical pop fodder” and “predictable” dance moves of bubblegum pop sensation RBD (right image), though the article acknowledged the group’s huge music sales. (Compare that article to this one from USA Today).

-“Nelly Furtado…apparently has traded her cute cred for something more primal so she can instigate her skank standoff with (Shakira) the Colombian sexpot… Furtado can't hold a lighter to Shakira in that world”. Ouch!

Thanks for the update, will link it. Aterciopelados absolutely rocks, truly a great band - no matter what the language. Andrea's solo album was great. They deserve some major, major success and recognition.

Glad you like the post. I am a HUGE fan of Aterciopelados and I'll never forget seeing them in concert last August under a scorching sun in Central Park. (Though I'll never forgive myself for having a panic attack and not getting Andrea's autograph as she finished a TV interview shortly before the concert. Dammit!)

awesome..was that for the Latin Alternative event?

Yes, it was a free concert sponsored by the Latin Alternative Music Conference. Aterciopelados were the final act (after Bebe who was suprisingly good and some god awful metal/emo band) and they were just incredible. Pity they won't be back this year, though the LAMC-sponsored free concert with Gustavo Cerati and Mexican Institute of Sound doesn't sound half bad.

You'll probably be happy to know that Colombian alternative icons ATERCIOPELADOS are finally releasing a new album ("Oye") and touring the U.S. in support of it. And it's about time - I've waited 5 years for a new Aterciopelados studio album!!

I checked out some of the new music on their site - www.myspace.com/aterciopelados

Here are the U.S. tour dates for Aterciopelados:

Oct. 28th – Miami @ Rock en Ñ, Miami Performing Arts Center
Oct. 30th – Orlando @ Club Hush
Nov. 1st – New York @ SOBs
Nov. 3rd – Chicago @ Green Dolphin Street
Nov. 6th – Anaheim, CA @ JC Fandango
Nov. 8th – Los Angeles @ Henry Fonda Theatre
Nov. 9th – Riverside, CA @ Riverside Municipal Auditorium
Nov. 10th – Sunnyvale, CA @ Club Barcelona

ALSO, be sure to check out Hector Buitrago's solo album!!! It has Andrea Echeverri and Julieta Venegas as guest vocalists. The album is called "Conector" - I love it.
